Categorization of Space

Space are categorized into residential, commercial, and public spaces on most educational architecture websites. Subsequently, there are healthcare, educational, and hospitality spaces etc.

Categorized of space reflects the function and purposes of the space. However, the genre of things is a way of educating audience and show authority. In a society that values labor specialization, the purpose of a space is the most important characteristics of a space. For example, restaurants are for dining, and hotel is for spending the night, and a museum is for art viewing. The function of the space quickly directs people into the right space to meet their demand of the space. My brain tells me to go a coffee shop when I need a cup of latte. However, it does not explain why I want to go to different coffee shops on different days. Since my goal is to get a cup of coffee, any coffee shop meets my demand.

As the function of the space can help me to make the decision where to go, but which coffee shop to is a not a decision made based on functionality. The decision-making process involves with both the logical thinking and intuitive emotions.

The genre of the space is obviously generated by logical thinking. Logical thinking is advocated by the society to maximize the efficiency of the society. It reduces the involvement of emotions for most general tasks, such as a restaurant is for dining.

However, spaces are much more than just their functionalities. Space can also be categorized based its atmosphere. For example, going to a landscape space can make people feel their mind is broadened. When you feel stuck, diving into the nature might help you to move out. On the other hand, a simple, small space can help people to focus comparing with a large, open space. If you feel your mind is clustered, walking into an organized space with order, can calm you down; if you feel you need to jump out of the box, when wandering on an ordinary street with unexpected events will do the trick.
